Georgia Swarm Wins 2017 NLL Champion’s Cup

 In News

After a year of hard work, the Georgia Swarm found themselves with their first NLL Championship win in franchise history, beating the two-time defending champions, the Saskatchewan Rush. They were led by Miles, Lyle, and Hiana (Jerome) Thompson.

2017 NLL Championship Game

It was a particularly big game for the Thompson Brothers because all four brothers were playing (Jeremy Thompson is on the Saskatchewan Rush). The game was close, with both teams attacking back and forth; but in the end, the young Georgia Swarm was able to emerge victorious in dramatic fashion.

In the final stretch of regulation, it looked as if Jeremy and his team had a solid lead over his brothers on the Swarm, but the Swarm had other ideas. Following a goal from his teammate Jordan Hall, who made a spectacular airborne shot past the Saskatchewan goalie, Lyle Thompson sliced through defenders and laid down another fantastic shot. The shot was picked up by a teammate for another goal, tying the game at an even score with three seconds left in regulation.

2017 NLL Championship Game Winning Goal

In typical Thompson Brothers fashion, both Lyle and Miles played an integral role in the game-winning goal 57 seconds into overtime. Lyle drew back two defenders and just as they were upon him, he drove an underhanded pass to Miles who made the game-winning goal. That was his second goal of the game.

Lyle’s mentioned that if you took a look at the highlights from the brothers’ time at University at Albany, you can see him utilizing the underhanded pass to Miles in a lot. They’ve had a lot of time to practice together and form a fluid chemistry that was evident between them and the rest of the team throughout the game.

Post Game Celebration

When Lyle was asked about the Championship win, he said, “it was a team win,” and that he and the team were “prepared for this, we prepared for this to happen.” And they certainly were.

Lyle showed how he is a truly humble athlete. When he was holding his shining trophy, he said all he could think about was “everyone who has given him this opportunity;” giving thanks to his wife, kids, coaches (both old and new), and of course, his teammates.

The Thompson Brothers’ Success this Season on the Georgia Swarm

This was a big year for Lyle Thompson, setting a new record for single season Georgia Swarm points and assists records, with 116 points and 71 assists to end the season. He averaged 2.5 goals per game as well as 3.9 assists. His shot percentage, out of the 232 shots he took this season, was an incredible .194, which turned out to be the highest in the league.

With the season he had, he was crowned the 2017 National Lacrosse League Most Valuable Player. This was also a big season for his brother and teammate Miles, who had a new career high of 32 goals in 16 games. Jerome Thompson, just recently traded to the Swarm, had a good season as well finishing his season with 8 goals, 26 assists, and 36 loose balls.
