The Mount Allison Mounties, in conjunction with the Tantramar Marsh Hawks Lacrosse Association, have announced that they will be starting a youth initiative with the goal of spreading lacrosse at the youth level.

The initiative will see the Mounties send players on a tour of the local area schools offering demonstrations and introductory workshops in order to foster growth in the sport, which is exactly what the Tantramar Marsh Hawks were looking for.

“Our program was struggling to attract the younger players necessary to create a solid foundation and our Board thought that introducing the game into the local school system might be the answer,” commented Eric Sloan, President of the Tantramar Marsh Hawks. “Like most sporting groups run by volunteers, the few that are really active were stretched to the limit and could not possibly design and deliver the type of program envisioned.

Therefore we turned to the players from Mount A’s field team for consideration to our idea and they have been more than receptive. This education component should be a win-win relationship for Mt.A’s lacrosse team and our Association.”

The Mounties echoed the sentiment. “This initiative can only help both parties,” said Matt Kinney, the President of Mounties Lacrosse. “We are excited to help their association renumerate their program at the youth level, and in turn it will pay dividends in the future as some of these kids will be sure to attend Mount Allison. The prospect of expanding our fanbase is exciting to us as well.”

The Mounties will be hosted by schools in Sackville, Amherst and surrounding communities. In total, the Mounties will present to 7 schools starting in mid-March.
